his registration group refers to products or technologies that provide alternative communication methods for NDIS participants. It also refers to products that help participants access spoken or written communication, for example electronically. By making use of such products, people living with disability can build capacity, improve confidence, increase independence, and work toward their personal goals. As long as the products can be shown to have this effect, the NDIS will fund them.
Communications and Information Equipment is one of seven NDIS assistive technology registration groups, the others being:
- Assistive Equipment for Recreation
- Assistive Products for Household Tasks
- Assistive Products for Personal Care and Safety
- Hearing Equipment
- Personal Mobility Equipment
- Vision Equipment
The NDIS lists 18 examples of assistive products and services that aid participants with communications and information. Among them are:
Communication amplifiers, or products that amplify other people’s voices, typically in a group setting.
Education communication, or products that help with reading, writing, input, and output. For example, keyboards, trackballs, and other tools.
Electronic input devices, which detect neural and neuromuscular movements and give a person the ability to use computers. This is monthly lease/hire program.
Face to face communication products, which include electronic speech generating devices, visual technology, and other communication devices. An example would be a device that has customisable screens enabling voice output.
Personal readers, for example devices that convert text into speech.
Single button devices, or products that generate a pre-set audible message when the button is pushed.
Voice generators and amplifiers, for individuals with vocal impairments.
The NDIS will also fund repairs to communication equipment, as well as short term rentals of needed equipment.
