Supports for this category are designed to help NDIS participants become more independent and autonomous by supervising participants as they complete day to day tasks in their personal lives, and lending assistance where and when it is deemed necessary. The supports are available to participants in a variety of settings, both at home and in the community.
Various types of general support exist in the Daily Personal Activities category. Below are a few of the most common:
- Help with common household tasks
- Help with daily personal activities
- Help with Shared Living Arrangements
- Help with personal hygiene
- Supervision of day to day tasks
- Supported Independent Living (SIL)
- Short Term Accommodation and Assistance
The degree of support provided depends on the needs of each individual participant and will be tailored and customised accordingly. These needs are determined by a range of factors including the participant’s age, living circumstances, physical characteristics, medical condition, and personal wishes (e.g. he or she may not want family or friends to assist with intimate personal care). Higher level support includes assistance with things like:
- Showering and bathing
- Oral hygiene
- Dressing and undressing
- Grooming
- Using the toilet
- Bladder and bowel management
- Menstrual care
- Using appliances
- Eating and drinking
- Meal preparation
- Home maintenance
- Getting into and out of bed
- Scheduling and keeping appointments
In general, daily activities support is intended to help NDIS participants to pursue and achieve several different goals as opposed to being geared toward one specific goal. With that said, the overarching goal is to help participants live as independently as possible.
