This registration group provides for a variety of supports, from specific therapies to a key worker for the child and his or her family. Supports are available for all children living with disability or developmental issues between the ages of 0 and 6. Each child receives individualised assistance that caters to their specific needs.
The goal is to create a positive, safe, and stimulating environment that gives children with disability the best opportunity to grow and develop, maximising their long term potential. Given the wide range of disability affecting children, the types of supports covered by the NDIS vary significantly. Providers delivering supports must have experience with early childhood interventions, specifically with children with disability.
The first six years of a child’s life are critical to his or her long term development. This is true for all children, including those with developmental delay or disability. It is important to stimulate the child’s emotional, physical, and intellectual growth during these years. That means teaching them useful skills—e.g. social interaction, community engagement, and individual responsibility—that they will be able to utilise for the rest of their lives.
Children with disability who receive adequate care in their early years are more likely to achieve a high level of independence later in life, requiring less assistance and generally enjoying a higher quality of life.
