These supports are designed to promote physical and mental well being among people living with disabilities. Exercise physiologists and personal trainers work with NDIS participants to create exercise programs that are tailored to each individual’s needs. By engaging in exercise and personal well being activities, participants strengthen their bodies, manage pain, and learn to optimise their mobility. In doing so they build capacity and independence, and improve their mental health.
Exercise physiologists can help participants manage and/or overcome a range of disabilities and chronic conditions. These include physical and developmental disabilities, diabetes and obesity, arthritis, sensory disorders, and a number of degenerative conditions.
While creating an exercise program, the exercise physiologist will perform a detailed assessment of your lifestyle and medical history. He or she will also help you identify your personal goals so that you have something to work toward. Once the plan is developed, the physiologist will train you to exercise in a way that is safe and efficient.
The potential benefits of exercise physiology are numerous. Below are some examples:
- improved strength and mobility
- improved balance and coordination
- higher energy levels
- stress reduction and improved mood
- increased confidence
- weight loss
- achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle
- enhanced independence
Exercise physiology can help participants recover from injuries and operations, as well as certain medical issues (e.g. stroke). Those suffering from muscular disorders and arthritis can benefit from a tailored stretching regimen which improves flexibility and keeps joints from becoming stiff.
Depending on the individual’s circumstances, personal well being activities may be done at a dedicated centre, at home, or with a group.
