These supports help NDIS participants to become active in their communities by, among other things, performing social and civic activities. Participants are supported as they work to develop the skills and abilities necessary to engage with the community. They are also supported during community activities.
Participating in your local community is one of the most rewarding things you can do. It is good for both mental and physical health, and it helps participants meet new people and increase their independence. Supports exist to ensure participants get the most they can out of their community engagement. For example, participants are assisted with meals, shopping, transport, and connecting with new people.
There are plenty of recreational activities and programs designed for people with disabilities. Below is a list of example activities for this category:
- attending personal development courses
- joining a social group
- taking an outing or a holiday
- going on a holiday camp
- visiting a local library
- seeing a movie or a concert
- going to community events
- joining a sporting club
Funding is available for lessons in art, dance, singing, horse riding, etc. The lessons help expose participants to a wide range of activities so that they can choose the ones that most interest them. There is also funding available for camps or groups so that participants can hone their social skills.
If participants are interested in an activity that requires a special adjustment or tool for them to successfully participate, funding may be used to accommodate them. For example, an adapted golf club.
