The NDIS will fund supports for products that make it easier for participants to move around their home and their community. Maximising mobility is one of the most important things people with disability can do to achieve a high level of independence. It makes a big difference in finding and keeping work, engaging with the community, and staying fit and healthy.
The NDIS divides the personal mobility equipment group into five subgroups.
- Transfer Equipment
- Walking Equipment
- Seating/Wheelchair Equipment
- Specialised Strollers
- Wheelchairs & Scooters

The first is transfer equipment, examples of which include:
- ceiling hoists
- hoist slings
- mobile hoists
- hoists for getting in and out of pools
The second is equipment related to walking. Examples include:
- four-wheeled walkers with brakes and seats
- rollators
- walking frames
- walking tables
- walking devices (e.g. walkers, rollators) designed specifically for children
The third subgroup is specialised seating for wheelchairs and other wheeled mobility equipment. Examples include:
- customised postural seating systems
- head postural support
- limb or positioning postural support
- limb, foot, or head support to manage tissue integrity
- modular seating systems
- postural support that uses air flotation, automated pressure management, foam, or gel
- seat or back supports
- wheelchair accessories
The fourth subgroup is specialised strollers, examples of which include:
- crawlers and trolleys
- adjustable strollers and wheelchairs designed specifically for children
- strollers and buggies with special seating systems
- self-propelled wheeled stretchers
The fifth and last subgroup in the personal mobility equipment category is wheelchairs and scooters. Examples include:
- batteries and chargers
- wheelchairs for recreation and sport
- wheelchairs with powered wheels
- customised wheelchairs that are pushed by an attendant
- lightweight and folding wheelchairs
- heavy duty scooters for heavy set individuals
- folding scooters for indoor use
- replacement tyres
