Being able to operate a vehicle is one of the most important skills for people with disability who want to achieve independence. This category offers supports to participants who would like to be trained how to use adapted or modified vehicles that accommodate their specific needs.
Vehicle modifications include special hand controls, left-side accelerators, dual controls, manual and electronic spinner knobs, and satellite accelerators, among others. Providers accredited by the NDIS work with each individual participant, training them and conducting driving assessments, which are shown to the participant’s occupational therapist for review. This continues until participants are able to drive safely and independently.
Participants will receive customised training programs designed specifically with their disabilities in mind, so that they can learn at a pace that suits them.
The NDIS is committed to ensuring that Australians living with disabilities always have access to reliable transport. This access is the foundation of a person’s independence, as it enables employment, education, and community engagement, without which independence is extremely difficult to achieve.
For some participants driving a vehicle is not a realistic consideration. The NDIS offers other travel assistance programs as a solution; for example, taxi services. Community transport, typically via special bus services, is another option for participants who do not have access public transport.
Meanwhile, funding for transport costs arising from social, economic, or community activity is covered by other NDIS registration groups, namely Social and Community Participation and Improved Daily Living. This would include, for example, a trip to the theatre or a sporting event.
Still, there is nothing like having your own vehicle, and for that reason Specialised Driver Training is a great solution for eligible NDIS participants.
