Mental health is a major concern of the NDIS. That is why the program includes funding for counselling services. For many NDIS participants, counselling helps them develop essential skills needed to perform day to day activities. But beyond that, it is understood that living with a significant disability oftentimes takes an emotional and psychological toll. A counsellor can help participants manage increased levels of stress, anxiety, depression, etc. that arise as a result of their disability.
Many counselling centres have direct experience working with people of all ages living with a disability. They are able to provide an array of services, taking each individual’s specific needs into consideration. For example, a counsellor can help someone with a cognitive disability develop the tools needed to improve their communication skills. This enables the patient to increase their community participation and form stronger social bonds with others.
A counsellor can also help NDIS participants with:
- establishing personal goals and creating a strategy to achieve them
- improving self-image and self-esteem
- managing stress and anxiety
- treating depression and other mental illnesses
- coping with life transitions
- overcoming past trauma
- managing behavioral issues
- developing new techniques and coping strategies
- increasing independence
- managing money
- establishing routines

Counsellors that are registered with the NDIS are specially qualified to help people address issues related to their disability. They also have experience with the NDIS system and are able to walk patients through the process of securing funding. This involves filling out the necessary documents and submitting them to the NDIS for review.
