For individuals who have significant visual impairments, the NDIS provides access to orthoptist services. Orthoptists typically work within an eye care team directed by an ophthalmologist. They have a broad scope of expertise and are highly skilled in assessing and diagnosing eye movement disorders in children and adults. Orthoptists are also highly qualified in educating patients and making recommendations about how to effectively manage visual disabilities.
Many supports provided by orthoptists are eligible for NDIS funding. For example, someone who is trying to establish an NDIS plan can consult an orthoptist for a detailed visual assessment. In this assessment the orthoptist will examine visual fields, contrast sensitivity, ocular movements and more. He or she will then make a number of recommendations (including assistive technology if necessary), which are then used to create an individualised NDIS support plan.
Assessments conducted by an orthoptist can also be used to educate and guide other care providers as they deliver supports related to a person’s disability.
NDIS participants can consult an orthoptist to learn more about their disability, as well as available options for treatment. The goal is to get the most out of what functional vision remains, so that participants are in the best possible position to lead an ordinary, fulfilling and independent lifestyle. Additionally, orthoptists can help participants set personal goals and begin working toward them.
In many cases, an orthoptist will recommend vision equipment and other assistive technology. Examples include alternate format printers, communication equipment (e.g. a device that allows you to take notes in braille), image-magnifying software, mobile phones with large visual displays, and visual navigation devices.
